We had a sneak peek at the technology and design of the third generation Escape with the Ford Vertrek crossover concept from the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. What was called the Vertrek Concept at auto shows should roll off the assembly line in Louisville, KY next spring as the evolution of the Ford Escape. Today’s Escape is already ancient, going without a design overhaul to its boxy chassis since ’01. Whatever can be preserved from the Vertrek Concept will be, and the future Escape may have that car-like ride more suitable for the dogfight in the crowded five-seater crossover segment. Likely to be more spacious and refined a lot, the new Escape will also have that 180-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost motor that’s already deployed in a few models in Europe and is soon to be in production in the U.S.
